What the Buddha Taught, by Walpola Rahula (Grove Press,
first published in 1959 and now in its umpteenth printing, is
an unsurpassed introduction to Buddhism.
Being Peace, by Thich Nhat Hahn (Parallax Press).
In clear, beautiful language. Thich Nhat Hahn discusses the
importance of living in a way that creates peace. There's
a chapter on the Precepts of the Order of Interbeing, which
we recite in our longer services at the Zen Center.
Everyday Zen, by Charlotte Joko Beck (Harper).
Based on her talks to Zen students at San Diego Zen Center and
Zen Center of Los Angeles.
Subtle Sound, by Maurine Stuart Roshi (Shambhala). From
her talks mostly at Zen Center of Syracuse.
The Wisdom of No Escape, by Pema Chodron (Shambhala).
A book with lots of heart. Pema Chodron is an American
nun who directs Gampo Abbey, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery for
Westerners in Nova Scotia.
